About Pilates

What is Pilates?

Pilates is an exercise method that provides a whole range of physical & mental benefits, promoting health and wellbeing. It aims to encourage your mind and body to work together to improve your core strength, your posture, balance and flexibility. You will improve your joint mobility and stability, improve coordination and help relieve aches and pains. The method, originally called Contrology, was developed during the First World War by a visionary of his time, Joseph Pilates. A sickly child, he was determined to prove his doctors wrong, and dedicated his life to the study and practice of exercise, to return his, and others' bodies to peak physical condition. Originally used to rehabilitate injured soldiers, he realised the wider application of the method and opened a studio with his wife and business partner, Clara, in New York in the 1920s. Mainly catering to dancers initially, to help condition their bodies and overcome injuries, his teachings became hugely popular wth celebrities and the health conscious. Over the years, the Pilates method has stayed true to it's roots, but Modern Pilates has made use of advances in our anatomical and physiological understanding, to better cater to the wider public, so that now Pilates is the ideal exercise method for almost everyone, regardless of ability, age and fitness level.

Is it for me?

Pilates is suitable for almost everyone. Regular practice will help you improve your body's functional ability to perform everyday tasks, reduce aches and pains and help reduce stress levels.  My classes are suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced, as different modifications and progressions will be given so that everyone can work at their preferred level. The focus in Pilates is on performing each exercise in a controlled manner, being precise and ensuring correct form throughout, rather than trying to get as many reps in as possible but with poor form. Pilates is not a competition, and everyone will be at a different stage in their Pilates journey, so everyone is encouraged to focus on their own practice and gradually improving their individual strength, range of movement and posture.

Pilates for sport

Pilates is the perfect partner to other physical activities such as tennis, golf, running, cycling, swimming, and pretty much any sport you can think of! Many sports professionals are fans as they realise the benefits that Pilates can bring to their game, conditioning their bodies, improving their strength, endurance, agility and coordination.

About me

My Background

Hi, I’m Carol, and Strong Body and Strong Mama Pilates is my 3rd Child! I graduated from the University of Manchester with a Biology Honours Degree, and taking a slight detour into Finance for 13 years, I made my career as a National Sales & PR Manager. I had some great experiences and looked after the most incredible team of individuals, however, once our second son arrived, I knew that my priorities had changed and that I wanted to change direction into a career that would be more fulfilling and more beneficial for my health and that of my family. Pilates has been a big part of my life for over 10 years, helping me to overcome significant lower back injury, so it was a natural step for me to want to share the benefits of Pilates with others.

My Training

During my second Maternity leave, I completed my Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Mat Pilates, and also my Level 3 Qualification in Ante & Postnatal Instruction with HFE, a leading provider of fitness qualifications. You can find out more about them here: https://www.hfe.co.uk/. I specifically chose to do the additional pre and postnatal qualification as I feel passionate about helping support pregnant ladies and new mums. It's an incredible time in your life, but also a rollercoaster of emotions and body changes. Pilates was so fantastic and beneficial during and after both of my pregnancies, so I wanted to be able to offer this to other ladies safely and effectively. I'm excited to be able to offer both adult and ante and postnatal classes.

I feel that you can always expand your knowledge, and I've recently completed a Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral so that I'm better equipped to work with clients with chronic conditions and will be able to take referrals from GPs and Physiotherapists etc. I've also gained the advanced Level 4 Certificate in Physical Activity for the Management of Low Back Pain, and also Nutrition and Weight Management.

In June 2020, I completed two courses in Mental Health Awareness for Sport, Physical Activity & Exercise. One delivered by Mind, and the other by the Open University, to help me better understand the issues faced by people experiencing mental heath problems. The stigmas and barriers faced, how to overcome these, and how to encourage more people into physical activity as an excellent way of improving our mental, and physical health. I hope that my classes are already inclusive, but I feel this will help me ensure that everyone feels comfortable and supported in my classes. If you'd like to speak to me about attending classes with regards any concerns over your mental health, please don't hesitate to get in touch

I've completed my Emergency First Aid at Work training with The Red Cross. and I'm fully insured. I'm also fully DBS checked.

My Philosophy

Having felt the incredible benefits of Pilates myself, both in terms of physical rehabilitation and strength conditioning, and on reducing my stress levels, I want to be able to share my knowledge of Pilates with as many people as possible. I firmly believe that if everyone practiced regular Pilates, many of the physical and mental health concerns people have could be reduced. Everyone, regardless of age, ability, experience, gender or body type is welcome in my classes, and I hope that you will find them inclusive, friendly, fun, challenging and beneficial.
